After the rapid spread of this social trend, rumors emerged that Facebook pioneered the rainbow filter as a way of conducting a social experiment to gather data from its users. In response, Facebook denied these accusations and commented, “This was not an experiment or test, but rather something that enables people to show their support of the LGBTQ community… We aren’t going to use this as a way to target ads and the point of this tool is not to get information about people.” Whether or not this is true, experts say the data gathered from the research can reveal interesting findings on how the digital era has influenced social conformity.
